Woodward First and Second Year Tournament- Registration

Tomorrow registration will open for the Woodward First and Second Year National Championships.  The tournament will be held April 1st, 2nd and 3rd 2011.   All of the details, including registration are available on joyoftournaments.com.

For the most part the tournament will be run in the same manner it has been run in previous years with one notable exception.  This year we will be enforcing strict rules on what constitutes a first year and second year debater.  In order to make sure the playing field is fair and because some camps have offered scholarships in the past to the winners and top speakers in each division, we felt it necessary to draw a line in the sand and clearly define it for you.  Below is the section copied directly from the JOT invite.

AS OF 2011 WE WILL BE INCREDIBLY STRICT ON THE ELIGIBILITY STANDARDS FOR THE TOURNAMENT.  IF YOUR TEAM IS FOUND TO NOT BE IN THE RIGHT DIVISION THEY WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE TOURNAMENT.  IT IS AFTER EXTREME CONSIDERATION AND CONSULTATION THAT THIS POLICY HAS BEEN CREATED.

A NOVICE DEBATER IS DEFINED AS A DEBATER IN THEIR FIRST YEAR OF DEBATE.  THEY CANNOT HAVE DEBATED ON ANY PREVIOUS NFL TOPIC.  IF THEY DEBATED PRIOR TO THE 2010-2011 SEASON THEY ARE NOT NOVICES.  A 9TH GRADER WITH 3 YEARS OF DEBATE IS NOT A NOVICE BECAUSE THEY ARE IN 9TH GRADE.

A SECOND YEAR DEBATER IS DEFINED AS A DEBATER IN THEIR SECOND YEAR OF DEBATE.  THEY CANNOT HAVE DEBATED PRIOR TO THE 2009-2010 SEASON.  IF THEY DEBATED ON ANY TOPIC PRIOR TO A 2009-2010 RESOLUTION THEY ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO DEBATE AT OUR COMPETITION.  A 10TH GRADER IN THEIR 3RD OR 4TH YEAR OF DEBATE IS NOT A SECOND YEAR DEBATER.

Answers to some questions

What if my debater Did Policy/PF (or any combo of the 3 debate events) in 9th grade and now switched to LD (any combo of the 2 events offered at Woodward) for 10th, can they debate?

– Yes, BUT they have to debate in the second year division, because it is their second year of debate.

What if my debater did LD for 2 years and now does policy in their third year, can they debate?

– No, they are in their 3rd year of debate and are not eligible to debate at Woodward.

If you are at all confused or concerned about this PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE contact me.  I would rather avoid confusion about this and resolve any issues BEFORE the tournament begins.

We plan on having the same wonderful hospitality, and hope you join us in Atlanta in April

lol… Reading is fundamental. How else could you interpret this:

"A 9TH GRADER WITH 3 YEARS OF DEBATE IS NOT A NOVICE BECAUSE THEY ARE IN 9TH GRADE."

Did you think they were talking about kids who failed the 9th grade twice? Of course middle school debate counts as debating.

are debaters that are juniors but in their second year allowed to debate in the second year division? seniors?

theres a difference between "middle school debate" and debating (on the high school circuit) while in middle school. The former can barely be considered "debating" at all
